Can someone give me a simple technique to size a servo motor for a material unwind? I have roll diameter, roll weight, and line speed.

Are you going to be using the servo drive to maintain tension in the material? If so, you will need enough torque to hold the highest tension at the largest roll diameter. In addition to that, you'll need enough torque to accelerate/decelerate the roll as the drive works to maintain the tension setpoint as well as enough torque to accelerate/decelerate through line speed changes.

You can download a free sizing software package from Copperhill Technologies. I use it all the time and it works very well.

I don't think any of the SureServo motors are in the database but it will give you torque and speed parameters required for the application.

Thanks for that website. I believe I ran across it in some of my searches, but I did not realize that it was free.

Glad I could be of help - if you do start using the package, I know you have to have all the main parameters filled out for each section before it will give you an correct answer. Generally if a section is correct, it will show you a green check mark at the top.

Let me know if you start using it and you need any help setting up an application.

P.S. I think we paid $ 500 for the program a few years back before it was free ;)

Apparently VisualSizer-SureServo is no longer on the copperhill site.

How do I obtain the software?

    Thanks,

    Gordonra

You don't need the one specific to SureServo. You can use any one you can find but you would have to enter the motor/drive parameters separately if they 're not in the library. Typically the parameters you need on the motor end are motor inertia, rated speed / torque, and max speed.

Also, regarding the unwind, you may want to use it with a dancer. I don't know enough about the SureServo units but typically when unwinding, it's much easier to use a dancer / tension arm than try to incorporate those functions in a simple drive.

You may be able to use just a standard inverter to accomplish the same thing.
