GS20 vfd loud pop. Need troubleshooting help
My GS 20 vfd has powered my old powermatic table saw with a 3 phase motor successfully for a few years. Today it made a loud pop like a breaker snap, then would not run the motor.
The unit still has power as the red led lights are on. Panel box breaker is on. Tried holding the reset button. Tried unplugging for a while.
Thoughts?
Thanks, Scott
Any fault code?
No fault codes. The screen appears normal...indicator light next to "run" when I press run and next to "stop" when I press stop.
Not sure what else to check.
May be time to call or email AD tech support
Take the face off and see if there is a fuse that blew
New info: I installed a new vfd that works fine, so that rules out the motor and external wiring as causes. Any other fixes or is this how they die?
It's a throw away drive especially at that size. You can better protect it with semiconductor fuses on the power input. The book recommends JHL50, but those each cost more than the new drive. Ensure it's protected from ingress of debris and water. Maybe TJS50-1 fuses would be helpful? They're 50A very fast acting and rated for 600v
EDIT: I had the wrong vfd part number...
Fair enough. Thanks
If a VFD blows an input fuse, it's already too late. The fuse helps prevent rapid disassembly.
I've seen input fuses that may have saved a drive from 3 phase power disturbances, but I agree with Tom that if the drive doesn't save itself from internal or output power problems, the fuses aren't likely to help.
Thanks Tom and Okie. So I have replaced the Vfd.
For knowledge sake, I want to diagnose the problem and learn from this. Do vfds have internal fuses? The saw had not been used for a month or so when I hit the start button and heard the pop. Could light dust or a bug in the vfd have caused it?
Just pondering.
