It tells me the file wasn't closed properly and needs to regenerate, then puts a message on the screen about the link and never changes. Is there a file I can delete? I just need the ladder for a customer in trouble.
I have six copies on an air gapped disk as well, they all behave the same.

Doing a Google search I was able to find this website with a freeware version of DirectSoft4. Maybe this can open the file?
It's telling you that your PC does not have a COM6 serial port that the project's comm link is configured to use. One work around is to assign COM6 to a serial port on your PC.
An alternative is to do PLC->Connect after opening the project and choose/create a DIFFERENT comm link (ethernet, serial on COM1 or whatever) that actually works on your PC.
I can't get the project to open because it is "regenerating the index," then the popup about the COM port appears.
For whatever reason, DirectSoft4 will only offer COM1 or COM2.
What confuses me is if I don't connect anything, it won't even let me view the project. I can open other projects without issue.
There should be a bunch of files with different extensions of your project name. ZIP up all those files (e.g. MyProj.prj, MyProj.VD, MyProj.VF, etc. (10+ extensions) and email them to support at hosteng.com (Host Engineering are developers of DirectSOFT PLC Programming software).
Yeah, your project's documentation database was corrupted. DS4 doesn't handle it well (infinite loop). DS6 at least salvages what it can, and luckily DS6 project file format is compatible with DS4. Glad we could help you out!
